The Cornell Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (CBE) Graduate Symposium is the signature research event of the year in the Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. This year will feature presentations, posters, networking opportunities, and a celebration of recent achievements within the graduate program.

The CBE Applied Materials Graduate Symposium is scheduled for Thursday, January 16, 2020. Research programming begins at 9:00am at the Cornell Physical Sciences Building, and the reception dinner begins at 6:00pm at the Ithaca Marriott.

Functional Polymers for Sustainability and Healthcare

Polymers are macromolecules composed of many repeat units, with applications ranging from energy and sustainability, microfluidics/nanofluidics, electronics, and healthcare. Recent advances in polymer science and technology have enabled nanoscale control of the synthesis, processing, characterization, and assembly of polymers. Those precisely controlled processes in turn enhanced the performance of polymeric materials during application. We will focus on two examples of such development – the highly controlled synthesis and processing of polymers using initiated Chemical Vapor Deposition (iCVD) to improve membrane separations, and the engineered assembly of block copolymers for infectious disease treatment. These two examples highlight the importance of understanding and manipulating polymeric materials on the molecular level, and the power of an integrated approach for materials discovery, characterization, and application.
